You sit down at your home office to start the workday, open your laptop, and notice your Wi-Fi feels sluggish. Meanwhile, the kids are streaming videos on their tablets, gaming on consoles, and scrolling on their phones. Every one of those devices is connected to the same network you use for work, banking, and storing personal files.
If you have never thought about what happens when your kids’ devices share your network, you are not alone. Most families do not think about it until something goes wrong. But the reality is that every device on your network is a potential entry point, and not all of them are as careful as you are.
The problem with shared networks
When a device connects to your Wi-Fi, it gets access to everything else on that same network. That means your kid’s phone can see your computer, your printer, your smart home devices, and anything else connected to the same router. Most of the time this is not a problem. But when one of those devices gets compromised, the attacker has a path to everything else.
Kids’ devices are especially risky for a few reasons. They run apps from app stores that sometimes include adware or tracking software. They connect to public Wi-Fi at school, friends’ houses, and restaurants, picking up risks along the way. And they often run outdated software because nobody remembers to update them.
A single infected tablet on your network can quietly scan for other devices, try to access shared folders, or send your network traffic through a server you do not control. You would never know it was happening until something breaks.
What your kids’ devices actually bring to the network
Think about what your children’s devices do on a typical day. They download games and apps, watch videos, browse websites, and connect to social media platforms. Each of those activities involves downloading data from the internet and storing it on the device.
Some of those apps request permissions they do not need. A flashlight app that wants access to your contacts and location is not just annoying. It is a sign that the app may be collecting data or serving ads through networks that could carry malware.
Gaming consoles are another common weak point. They run operating systems that rarely get updated unless you manually check for updates. They connect to online services that can be targeted by attackers. And they often stay on all the time, which means they have more opportunities to pick up problems.
Tablets handed down from parents to kids often still have old apps installed, old passwords saved, and outdated software. They are essentially time capsules of security risks.
The guest network solution
Most modern routers support a guest network, which is a separate Wi-Fi network that keeps devices isolated from your main network. This is the single most effective step you can take.
Put your kids’ devices on the guest network. Put your work computer, your personal laptop, and anything that handles sensitive information on the main network. The two networks share the same internet connection, but devices on the guest network cannot see or access devices on the main network.
If your kid’s tablet gets infected with malware, that malware cannot reach your work files. If a gaming console picks up a vulnerability, it cannot scan your computer for open ports. The isolation is not perfect, but it stops the most common ways that problems spread from one device to another.
Setting up a guest network is usually straightforward. Log into your router settings, look for guest network or guest Wi-Fi, enable it, and give it a separate name and password. Then connect the kids’ devices to that network instead of the main one.
Content filtering and DNS-level protection
Beyond isolation, you can also control what your kids’ devices are allowed to access. Many routers include basic parental controls that let you block certain categories of websites or set time limits on internet access.
A more powerful option is to change your DNS settings to use a family-friendly DNS service. DNS is the system that translates website names like google.com into IP addresses. By pointing your router to a DNS service that blocks known malicious sites, ads, and adult content, you add a layer of protection that applies to every device on your network.
Services like NextDNS, Cloudflare for Families, or OpenDNS Family Shield offer free or low-cost plans that filter traffic at the DNS level. You set it once in your router and it works for every device that connects through your network.
This does not replace talking to your kids about safe internet use, but it does reduce the chances that a accidental click leads to a downloaded virus.
Keep devices updated
This is the step that almost nobody does consistently. Every device on your network, including phones, tablets, gaming consoles, and smart home gadgets, runs software that needs updates. Those updates include security fixes that patch known vulnerabilities.
Set a reminder to check for updates on every device in your house once a month. Most devices can update automatically if you enable the setting. Take five minutes to go through each one and make sure automatic updates are turned on.
An outdated tablet running software from two years ago is missing dozens of security patches. If that tablet is on your network, those unpatched vulnerabilities are available to anyone who can reach it, including malware that arrives through a compromised app or website.
Talk to your kids about what they download
Technical controls only go so far. The most effective protection is a conversation about what your kids are downloading and installing on their devices.
Ask them what apps they use. Look at those apps together and check the permissions they request. Explain why downloading games from unofficial sources is risky. Talk about why they should not click on links in messages from people they do not know.
You do not need to be an expert to have this conversation. You just need to make it clear that not everything on the internet is safe, and that downloading unknown software is one of the most common ways devices get infected.
